There is no set design or style to a nicho as shown by the photos on this page, but traditionally a nicho has an arched top. Grand River Supply sells a plaster nicho that can easily be installed in virtually any wall. They also sell nichos as an optional accessory to their kiva fireplaces. Of course you can also build your own nicho from a variety of materials.

Nicho, Spanish for niche, or recess. A nicho is a space cut into an adobe wall. Nichos provide a place to display objects of religious or artistic value.

Historically smaller Nichos were cut out of the wall without providing additional support. Larger nichos often required a lintel or arch to support the structure above and may be accessible from both sides of the wall.

With modern methods of construction, the nicho must be box or support structure inserted into the wall. You may also consider adding lights to your niche as an additional highlight for your treasured religious or artistic icon.
