Nichos

Nicho, Spanish for niche, or recess. A nicho is a space cut into an adobe wall. Nichos provide a place to display objects of religious or artistic value.

Grand River Supply sells a plaster nicho that can easily be installed in virtually any wall. They also sell nichos as an optional accessory to their kiva fireplaces. A nicho is a space cut into an adobe wall. Nichos provide a place to display objects of religious or artistic value. Historically smaller Nichos were cut out of the wall without providing additional support. Larger nichos often required a lintel or arch to support the structure above and may be accessible from both sides of the wall. With modern methods of construction, the nicho must be box or support structure inserted into the wall.
